What to expect
“Wow!”, “Oh my God!”, “Amazing!”, was all we could hear from people using binoculars to watch the stunning details and grasp the majestic scale of the lava lake and fountains at the bottom of the Kilauea caldera.
At night especially, the raw beauty of the volcano is also enhanced by one of the most amazing night skies you can ever imagine. A truly picturesque Milky Way belts the sky, or a full moon paints a surreal silver glow over the raw terrain complementing the warm, orange lava glow.
During the day, the full ragged beauty of a broken terrain is on display. The sheer size of the caldera, with its fallen cliffs and broken plateaus, reminds you of the unstoppable power of nature.
Recommendations
For a full, memorable experience, we recommend visiting the park for a Sunrise at the Kilauea overlook. The park will be mostly empty, with plenty of parking and no road closures or delays due to traffic. Also, the ambient noise in the park will be lower than throughout the day, and you will be able to hear the noises of the erupting lava fountains.
Tourists from the continental US have the advantage of the time zone difference as the best time to arrive at the park is about 2 hours before sunrise. This gives you ample time to enjoy the full glow of the lava while the sky is still dark, allowing for a fantastic stargazing experience when clear. Under the sunrise light, the landscape will drastically change and display its raw beauty. Bird songs will replace the thundering noises of the lava fountains, and the lava glow will slowly give way to reveal the vastness of the caldera.
If you cannot arrive early in the morning, try to be in the park at least 2-3 hours before sunset to secure a parking spot and a viewing location before the park gets congested.

What to expect
As you enter the park, the first thing that strikes you is the smell of sulfur in the air, a reminder that you are in a place where the earth is alive and active. The park’s landscape is a juxtaposition of lush rainforests and volcanic rock deserts, creating a unique and otherworldly appearance.
Hawai’i is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life that have adapted to the harsh conditions of the volcanic environment. Trees such as the Ohi’a Lehua and the Hapu’u tree ferns are home to various endemic bird species like the Hawaiian Honeycreepers and the Saffron Finches, as well as introduced species like the Jackson Chameleon. The park is also home to the Nene geese, Hwaii’s state bird.
Your visit will leave you with a sense of awe and respect for the natural world and should be visited by everyone who wants to experience nature’s raw beauty and power.
